Abstract

This article, of a theoretical and exploratory nature, proposes to identify the potential of the contributions
of symbolic interactionism, focusing on the work of Erving Goffman, in relation to Anglo-Saxon Disability
Studies. The study addresses three questions that seek to understand some aspects of the field of disability
from the point of view of sociology: What were the reasons why symbolic interactionism was, early on,
excluded from the field of Disability Studies in its intention to produce sociological knowledge about
disability? What criticisms and rereadings converged in social studies on disability to address a critical analysis
of stigmatization processes, social interaction and experiences? What concepts and approaches, from the
perspective of interactionism, could provide methodological tools for the study of disability as a sociological
problem and practical strategies for the movement of people with disabilities in the fight for recognition?
